Acupuncture is one of the most ancient techniques in Chinese medicine. It evolved gradually to the form known today using very thin needles. First the ancient Chinese could perceive the channels known as the meridians and then the points on these channels that affect the flow of energy (=QI) to the organ and to all physical structures connected to this channel respectively. Inserting needles into the points in different sizes and techniques, and doing different manipulations on them creates an effect on the body such as opening stagnation of energy flow, reinforcing the organ energy, expelling wind or dampness or any excess from the organ or channel. In TCM we have different acupuncture methods. In my clinic I practice these mentioned here below:
Shonishin is a technique that evolved in japan for treating children with Chinese medicine. According to this theory the channels and acupuncture points are not fully evolved in kids so there is a need to work differently on them to bring about health and balance back to the system. The technique works with small tools that we use to stroke pad and tap the meridians and the acupuncture points without needles and without acupuncturing. This is also very pleasant for the kids and is not intimidating. With shonishin we can also give simple tools for the parents to treat their kids at home. The advantages of the technique are
Moxibustion therapy refers to the process of warming specific points of the body with the healing plant Artemisia princeps (mugwort). Moxa is using this plant in different forms to create different effects and support the acupuncture treatment. The use of this plant enables deep warming of the body and strong reinforcement of organs.
A vacuum is produced during cupping with the use of cupping glasses. These cupping glasses are placed directly on the skin. The low pressure can be generated by a suction device in the cupping glass. The location of the cup is chosen according to the pathology that is being handled. The location chosen can affect the organ that is under it. There are a few techniques to use cupping:
Bloodletting is a very ancient treatment technique in which we let a controlled amount of blood flow out of the body. The location of the bleeding enables us to direct the effect. It is used very often in pain therapy to open mechanically the flow in the channel along the pain that is created. Another effect of bloodletting is to take out pathogens from the body such as heat. It’s a very effective technique that supports our general treatment.
Gua sha is a traditional Chinese medical treatment in which the skin is scraped with a smooth round instrument to produce light bruising. Gua sha releases unhealthy pathogens from the treated areas and stimulates blood flow and healing.
Electroacupuncture is a form of acupuncture in which a small electric current is passed between pairs of acupuncture needles. The constant stimulation of the needles during the treatment can increase significantly the effectiveness of the acupuncture treatment. It is being used particularly for treating pain and paralysis, because of its strong ability to open blood and energy stagnation in the channels.
Meridians are the channels which the acupuncture points are set upon. These are channels that flow between tissues in the body (such as: muscles, bones, blood vessels). In these channels flows the QI or the energy we want to manipulate. When acupuncturing we affect the flow in these meridians. In meridian therapy we massage and feel these meridians in a deep level to find blocks, nodules, excess or deficiency in them.
According to the Chinese diagnose of the patient there will be a recommendation to consume certain foods while trying to avoid others. Chinese medicine checks for example if there is excess heat or cold in the system, accordingly will come a recommendation to avoid or consume cooling or warming foods. Nutrition will also be recommended according to the type of element that the person is or to the element that is in excess/deficient in him/her respectively (which type out of the 5 elements: water, wood, fire, earth, metal).
Chinese medicine is well known for its amazing tools of very fine and subtle diagnosis methods. These methods takes sometimes lifelong experience to be able to come to a deep, clear and correct diagnosis of the person. That is a great challenge for any therapist and is why we use several diagnosis techniques at the same time. It helps to get a full picture and more accurate diagnosis of the patient.
